Fashion photographer duo and sisters Sally Ann & Emily May took us to their most treasured travel story and visual diary shot on film for Atlantis Shoes: A Road Trip Along New Zealand's Southern Alps.
That night, the airplane landed smoothly through the fallen snow in the dark. Just a short flight from Sydney through the Pacific Ocean, we arrived at our first destination, Queenstown. As we settled in at our place for the night, we let our eyes wander over things we have never witnessed before: The Remarkables mountain range that seems too out of reach from afar.
The road through New Zealand’s southern island was clear as we hit the State Highway 6 early morning. With a fresh, hot coffee in hand, we drove away from the city, stopped at the charming Te Anau, and arrived at the border of Milford Sound before the sun goes down.
With a heavy backdrop of snow-capped mountains, we sped through the valleys and witnessed the changing leaves along the driveway. As we got closer to Mt. Cook mountain range, I remembered I heard myself whisper: I don't want to be a vagabond anymore, I want to be a mountain.
There was something in the water. The mirrored lake with the tree of solitude felt like a mere daydream for most. Mother nature is healing and humbling at the same time. After the trip, I felt inspired, centered, and more content than I had ever before. The memories still linger in my mind, refueling my soul with the fullness of life and how it connects with my place in the universe. When I got back to Sydney, the city was still the same, but for sure something in me had changed.
